In a world of technological advancement, increasing competition and changing consumer behaviours, most opportunities for growth come from the area of product development. We often look to the big tech companies in Silicon Valley, the so called GAFA, with admiration mixed with a touch of envy. They reached in relatively short time remarkable numbers in terms of market share, audience, revenues and profit. At a quick glance, their secret ingredient is obvious: the remarkable numbers are the result of strong product performance. Innovation in tech tends to focus on product performance – new products, new updates, new features.
Product development is quite new to the media industry. It is at the core of any monetisation strategy for media houses. Media products are not only the traditional newspaper, but with the digital transformation of the business, digital products are much more diversified: stories with interactive or data components, newsletters, mobile applications, bots that facilitate a conversation with the news, special projects and event sites, social media engagement products, internal projects like content management systems, subscription services, and analytics products that help an organization more efficiently manage more efficiently their operations.
